Blog Post: "Nothing but the Truth by Avi" Review

Hi everyone, this blog post is a review about Nothing but the Truth by Avi. The book is a must-read (or so says Mdm Lim) and I think it is interesting, albeit a little weird.

This book is strange because it is written mostly in dialogue with a few memos here and there. That is what makes the book a little strange as books are not normally written fully in dialogue. This is also bad in a way, as the book is perceived to be boring by those who is accustomed to reading full-length novels with vivid descriptions of characters and settings.

However, the book has its good points too. The book, through dialogue, can convey clearly the feelings and emotions of each character speaking, provided the speaker is adept and reading emotions normally when others are speaking. Also, readers will feel as though they are really there, since the book is in the form of a dialogue.

There are also moral issues discussed in the book. One of them is patriotism. The main character seems to go overboard with patriotism, which causes the entire affair to happen. Of course, in real life, it is important to be patriots to our country, but we need not go overboard. However, in the end, I feel that the main reason why the main character of the book had chosen to do what he had done is because he was allowed to do so in his previous form class and was forbidden to do so in his new form class by a teacher he disliked deeply. So, I think he had done it mainly because he was rebelling against the teacher. One of the key themes in this book is misunderstanding and misconception. The entire book started all because of it, with the boy and the teacher feeling a lot worse after the entire affair. The teacher should have been more forgiving and the boy more receptive to new things.

All in all, I think the book is interesting in a way, but strange too.
